(WebDesk) – 12 October 1999, was the most significant – infact was the watershed in the life of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and politics of a Pakistan’s major political party, Nawaz Sharif led Pakistan Muslim league - Nawaz.



October 12, 1999 - General Pervez Musharraf’s coup detet and Nawaz Sharif 

Then Chief of Army Staff Pervez Musharraf had overthrown the government of then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Smelling the rat, Nawaz Sharif fired the then COAS Pervaiz Musharaf when signally a creeping coup in his ways and there the then COAS Gen. Musharaf struck back with a swift bloodless coup hours later.

Army troops encircled PM’s home, closed all airports and shut down the state-run television and radio stations and took the control of all administrative buildings in every province and placing PMLN leadership and Nawaz Sharif loyalists under house arrest. At Nawaz’s residence, troops disarmed the guards and entered the home. Then PM Nawaz Sharif refused to resign or withdraw his orders to kick out the army chief of staff. Nawaz Sharif was taken into an arrest.

Later, the state Television began with an announcement stating that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had been dismissed. Next morning Gen Pervaiz Musharraf addressed the nation in a pre-recorded message, announcing an end of Nawaz Sharif politics.

Despite such a forceful ouster, a deal, an exile, the events later unfolded in a way that paved ways for PMLN Supremo to made come backs one after another. Crossing all the impediments in his way with his political wisdom and support and admiration within people of Pakistan, he again became Prime Minister in General Elections 2013.

Settling down the ruckus span over a decade after the 12 October 1999 coup detet, Nawaz Sharid once again embroiled when Panama Papers emerged which wreaked another havoc that only concluded with his another ouster, disqualification, arrest and then release - in another cycle in his own government. Nawaz Sharif on multiple occasions termed it controversy against him for taking former Gen. Pervaiz Mushrraf into accountability as he has been facing treason charges and is declared absconder by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Here’s a glance at the 19 years of series of events of ouster and comeback of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif since 12 October, 1999 coup detet by General Pervaiz Musharaf:

October 12, 1999 – Then Army General Pervez Musharraf ousted and arrested then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a coup detat and replace him with himself.

January 2000 - Sharif was trialed under the charges of hijacking plane of Gen. Musharaf and conspiracy to commit murder.

April 6, 2000 – Nawaz Sharif was convicted of plane hijacking and terrorism and sentenced to life imprisonment. He is charged with hijacking because he attempted to prevent a plane Musharraf was flying in from landing at any airport in Pakistan, when the plane was low on fuel. It was considered Nawaz Sharif was aware of Musharraf’s coup intentions.

July 22, 2000 – He was also convicted of corruption charges and sentenced to an additional 14 years in prison while already serving a life sentence. His failure to declare assets and pay taxes led to the conviction.

December 2000 – Nawaz Sharif released from prison by a deal brokered by the Saudi royal family and went in exile for a period of 7 years.

October 29, 2004 - His father died and Nawaz Sharif had been denied a brief return sought to Pakistan to attend the funeral, after serving only four of his 10-year exile in Saudi Arabia.

May 14, 2006 - A Charter of Democracy was signed by former Premiers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir in London which signaling an alliance between two significant political parties of Pakistan to end the military rule established by the 1999 Pakistani coup detat led by General Pervez Musharraf and restore civilian democratic rule.

August 23, 2007 - Pakistan’s Supreme Court lifted the exile imposed on Sharif Family.

September 10, 2007 – He was deported back after he tried to return to country from exile.

November 25, 2007 – Former Premier Nawaz Sharif once again made a way to Pakistan and Pakistan politics from exile in Saudi Arabia, flying into the city of Lahore.

February 18, 2008 - Nawaz Sharif party Pakistan Muslim League-N (PMLN) secured 67 seats - emerged as second biggest party in general elections 2008.

February 20, 2008 – Nawaz Sharif led PMLN and winner of elections 2008 party PPP announced to form a coalition government.

August 25, 2008 – The coalition split after four months only following disagreements over the reinstatement of judges Musharraf dismissed.

February 2009 - The court ruled that Nawaz Sharif was ineligible for office because he had a criminal conviction.

May 26, 2009 - Supreme Court of Pakistan gave a ruling of Nawaz Sharif’s eligibility to run in elections and hold public office.

July 17, 2009 - Pakistan’s Supreme Court cleared Nawaz Sharif of hijacking charges, paving ways for him to legally run for office.

April 19, 2010 – Then Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari voluntarily signed the 18th Amendment which also removes the two-term limit for prime ministers, allowing him to vie for a third term.

June 5, 2013 – Nawaz Sharif was elected again as Prime Minister of Pakistan.

August 30, 2014 – PTI chairman Imran Khan staged a sit in against alleged meddling in elections and demanded Nawaz Sharif to resign. Sharif refused to resign. He has vowed to remain on the job despite violent demonstrations. The protesters have accused him of rigging last year’s elections that allowed his party to take power. The sit-in ended only after the bloodbath of Army Public School.

03 April, 2016 – Panama Scandal surfaced off-shore companies allegedly owned by Kin of Sharif.

April to August 2016 – Opposition demanded probe against the sitting Premier under the Panama Papers Scandal.

November 1, 2016 - The Supreme Court announced to form a commission to investigate Sharif’s finances after leaked documents showed that his children owned shell companies in the British Virgin Islands.

April 20, 2017 - A panel of judges ordered a new probe of Sharif’s finances, calling on the prime minister and his family to testify.

July 28, 2017 – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif resigned shortly after Pakistan’s Supreme Court ruled that he has been dishonest to Parliament and to the judicial system and is no longer fit for office.

April 13, 2017 – Supreme Court of Pakistan disqualified Nawaz Sharif for life under Article 62-1-F.

July 6, 2018 – Nawaz Sharif was sentenced by accountability court to 10 years in prison and fined £8 million ($10.5 million) relating to corruption charges over his family’s purchase of properties in London. His daughter Maryam, seen as his heir apparent, receivea a seven-year sentence and a £2 million ($2.6 million) fine. Captain Safdar, her husband, received a one-year sentence. They are barred from engaging in politics for 10 years.

July 13, 2018 - Sharif and his daughter Maryam were arrested and held in Islamabad after they fly back from the United Kingdom to face prison sentences.

September 11, 2018 – Nawaz Sharif’s better half – former first lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz battling cancer, passed away. Nawaz Sharif, daughter and son-in-law given permission to perform the rituals of funeral on parole.

September 19, 2018 - The Islamabad High Court suspended the jail sentences in corruption charges against Sharif and his daughter Maryam. The two were ordered to pay bail of $5,000 each. Sharif served less than three months of a 10-year sentence. Since his release, Nawaz Sharif has shown no aggressive respond against the incumbent PM Imran Khan led PTI government.

October 05, 2018 – Nawaz Sharif’s brother and president to PMLN, Shahbaz Sharif was arrested in Ashiana Housing Scandal ahead of by-bolls scheduled to be held on October 04th, 2018.

It is being escalated in the political circle that former ousted Prime Minister once again would make another come back in politics after the chehlum of his wife as PMLN is direly suffering for leadership after the arrest of president of PMLN. This can be another beginning of cycle.
